At Second Movement our aim is to regenerate both opera and its audience in the UK. We achieve this through

  • Staging modern, risk-taking productions of the highest quality that reject the conventional and traditional aspects of opera production
  • Performing opera in English to ensure immediate comprehensibility and dramatic integrity
  • Using unconventional spaces (warehouses, music halls, churches) which both challenge the parameters of the standard operatic experience while ensuring through the use of modest-sized venues that the words can be heard and understood
  • Using young talent thus exploiting both their energy and creating a feeling that this is a medium young people can relate to
  • Exploring one-act repertoire that allows surprising, flexible programming, challenges prejudice about the form, and unearths often rarely-performed works
  • Keeping ticket prices low to ensure that people pay little more than they would for a cinema ticket, thereby encouraging younger audiences
  • Establishing fruitful links with the other arts (for example dance, new writing and fine art) and in such collaboration regenerating both the form and people’s preconceptions of it
  • Fostering links with London communities, particularly through workshops with the young
